Abstract
The Soviet research vessel Dmitry Mendeleev approaches the coast of the state of Papua New Guinea. The village of Bongu, where in the 19th century the Russian scientist-ethnographer N.N.Miklukho-Maclay conducted ethnographic research. The villagers are engaged in household chores: they cook food on a fire, weave mats from palm leaves, collect coconuts. A fisherman catches fish using a spear. The Papuan is hollowing out a boat out of wood. Women work in the garden, planting in holes made with a stick. A woman-ethnographer from the ship "Dmitry Mendeleev" makes sketches, records the speech of the Papuan on a tape recorder. Papuans perform folk dances, play drums. Soviet doctor examines sick Papuans. Flag of the state of Papua New Guinea. City of Port Moresby, university building. Motorcycle, car, tractor on the street. Building construction.
