The film tells about the life and work of M. Gorky in Samara for 16 months, from February 1895 to May 1896. Used photographs: the city of that time, M. Gorky and his future wife Ekaterina Pavlovna Volzhina; friends of the writer and colleagues at work in the "Samarskaya Gazeta" - Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, Maria Sergeevna and Karl Karlovich Poserny, their daughter Smirnova, private attorney Dmitry Sergeevich Kishkin (brother of M.S. Posern), lawyer Yakov Lvovich Teitel, Alexey Vladimirovich Annenkov ( grandson of the Decembrist I.A.Annenkov), owner of the newspaper, publisher Semyon Ivanovich Kosterin, editor Nikolai Petrovich Asheshov (1826-1923), critic Alexander Alexandrovich Smirnov (Treplev) (1864-1943), head of the editorial office Evgenia Semyonovna Ivanova. Kuibyshev Literary and Memorial Museum, located in the house at 126 Stepan Razin Street (formerly Voznesenskaya Street), where the writer lived. The surviving city buildings of the Zhigulevsky brewery, the mansion of the merchant Vasily Suroshnikov (1914, architects F.O.Shekhtel, A.A. Shcherbachev).
