Abstract
A fiction film about the Gusev family living in a Chuvash village in the post-war period. Antonina Guseva's dream came true - her husband Gennady returned from the front. The fact that he lost two legs in the war does not overshadow family happiness. Two sons Vanya and Kolya are growing up. Family life changes when Antonina, the only female combine operator in the area, wins the socialist competition in 1950. She is awarded the Challenge Red Banner instead of the flowered chintz cut that she constantly dreams of. The banner is placed in the red corner of the hut. But the mice chew on it all the time. It is impossible to get rid of mice, even a cat does not help. The feeling of anxiety does not leave Antonina, she does not know how to save the banner. The smile disappears from her face. Despondency settles in the family. Every evening Tonya darns the fabric, and in the morning you have to work in such a way as to win the social competition. Only then will the pitted banner remain in the house. The beloved husband gets drunk and dies. The last survivor is Antonina: the eldest son Ivan is killed in a drunken brawl, the youngest son Nikolai is killed in the war in Afghanistan. After her death, strangers find old family photographs and a small piece of red cloth in the apartment (a town appeared on the site of the village) and a small piece of red cloth - what remains of the rolling Red Banner.
