A fiction film about the last peaceful day before the start of the Great Patriotic War in a border village on the western border of the USSR. On Sunday, father Elisey and mother Elena congratulate their daughter Nastya on her birthday. On the day of the girl's fifth birthday, it is a sunny day. All together go to the river. In the afternoon, Nastya and her friend Genka spy on matchmaking in one of the village courtyards. At the celebration of Nastya's birthday, friends and relatives make toasts to the Motherland, to the happiness of a young family. On a summer evening, young people dance to the accordion, sing ditties. There is no radio in the village, and no one knows that a war is already going on. In the morning Elisha leaves for work, the children are walking in the woods. A few hours later, the father returns home to say goodbye to his family. At this time, a German detachment enters the village, a former classmate of Elisha and Lena, Dziuba, serves as a guide. Since childhood, he envies their friendship, and then love. And he knows that Elisha is a communist, and Lena is a teacher.
