Abstract
The film tells about the inner crater bay (a volcanic mouth submerged by the sea) on Yankicha Island (Kuril Islands), about the unique ecosystem that has developed in the bay under the influence of volcanic activity. First part. Seascapes. Seagulls over the sea. General view of the Craternaya Bay. Rocks protruding from the water of the bay. Participants of the joint expedition of the Lennauchfilm film studio and the Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences on rubber boats explore the bay, sail in a stone grotto. Solfatory field. Steam above the ground, researchers in gas masks walk through the steam. Hot water jets bursting from the ground. Boiling sulfur flows. Mud fumaroles gurgle on the coastal beach. Water boils in one of the depressions. Eggs in a net are boiled in the water of the hollow. The man lowers the pot into boiling water. The motor boat sails in the bay. Divers are preparing to dive into the water of the bay, submerged under the water. Underwater photography (methane bubbles rise from the bottom of the bay, the diver measures the temperature of the ground at the bottom). The second part of. Motor boat with explorers in the bay. A tent set up on a pontoon in the bay. General view of the bay. Two divers are preparing to dive from the pontoon. Underwater surveys (a diver with a device moves along the crater wall, a colony of sea urchins on a stone shelf of a slope, a diver with a measuring grid swims up to the hedgehogs, measures population density, selects specimens of hedgehogs, sea cucumbers, starfish, bottom sea animals on the crater wall, gas bubbles rise from cracks in the bottom, white formations are microscopic worms). Scientists measure water in boilers, steam rises from the ground. Men in protective suits descend into the cauldrons. Mineralized water flows over the stones. Expedition camp on the coast of the bay. Biologist-submariner descends under water among rocks. Divers rise from the water to the motor boat. The third part. A man sits at a table in a minilab on a pontoon. Worms, ciliates (filmed through the eyepiece of a microscope). A sample of a white formation mat captured by a micro-time-lapse camera. Underwater photography (panorama of the bay wall, white formations, colonies of marine animals, underwater meadow cerentarium, crabs, drop-down flower of cerentarium). Landscapes of the Pacific Ocean. Views of the Craternaya Bay. Colonies of birds. Black foxes in the grass on the rock. The fox swims in the water. A man with a movie camera takes pictures of animals, birds. Fox's footprints in volcanic sand, foxes playing in the sand. Divers dive into the water, in the background - rocks in the fog. The wind bends down the plants on the rocks.
